Gallery North is excited to present master potter and
collage artist Mara Sparks as our featured artist for
December 2008. Her show, “Shapes and Layers” displays two
mediums: wheel thrown altered clay and paper collage. The
artist’s pottery celebrates traditional utilitarian forms
with natural colors of layered clays and whimsical
alterations such as tiny feet or overextending handles that
both exaggerate and balance the form. Her paper collages are
bold in color but comforting in subject matter, whether
landscape or flowers. Together, these two art forms express
Mara’s love of playful exploration of form and functional in
decorative works of art.
Gallery North invites the public to meet Mara Sparks at her
artist’s reception Saturday, December 6th from 1:00pm to
4:00pm and during the Edmonds Art Walk on Thursday, December
18th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Light refreshments will be
served.
Mara Sparks completed her BA at the University of Texas in
1992. In 1993 she began an apprenticeship in Tennessee in
the ‘Craftsman's Valley’ at Dollywood and became the Master
Potter two years later. Mara then completed one year of
graduate study in Fine Arts at East Tennessee State
University with the late Lynn Whitehead. She also studied
with other accomplished potters including the well-known
clay masters Steven Hill and Robin Hopper.
