Melanie Jorissen - History of Quilling

Quilling has an ancient root, but because of it delicate nature there is not a
solid record on when it started.  We do know that in the 13th century monks/nuns in many European countries quilled from the remnants of bibles into elaborate decorations for religious pictures.

Quilling was even a decorative art which ladies of leisure would make quilled
tea caddies, screens and workboxes. The background for these often included
foil, mica or flaked shells.

Quilling came over to America with the settlers, but little time remained for leisure and the artform was all but lost.  Today with the resurgence of paper art quilling is become more and more popular.  The tools pretty much stay the same, and with a greater variety of materials pieces are only limited by ones imagination.

Each piece of artwork is individual and unique. I use several art techniques when creating my pieces, paper quilling, paper sculpture, paper collage,  paper casting, watercolors and stamping techniques are a few that you may see in the following pieces.  I welcome consignments, if you do not see something you are looking for, please feel free to contact me and we can create something for you.
